Lemme smash, Almaguin: A guide to Almaguin’s finest smash burgers

August 30th, 2023 by Sarah Cooke

Smash burgers. We know them, we love them and a few restaurants in Almaguin are serving them.

Before we dive into the three groovy restaurants in the region that are offering these delightful burgs’, some may be wondering what exactly is a smash burger and how is it different from a regular ol’ hamburger.

The difference is in the cooking process and no, we’re not smashing the ground chuck with hammers – I know, I know, it would be fun but think of the mess.

Smash burgers are typically flattened or “smashed” while cooking to create a crispy outer texture and a juicy interior – yum! Regular burgers are not smashed. Traditional hamburgers are usually a thicker patty that is seasoned before shaping.

Smashing the patty as thin as possible onto the searing hot grill allows the burger to cook in its own fatty juices which is where we get that sweet, sweet burger flavour from, or so the experts say.

Since its creation in 2007, burger crafters have been spinning their own take on the smash burger and these three Almaguin restaurants are delivering the flavour.

So, let’s smash, Almaguin.

Burk’s Falls Café

If you’re traveling through the main strip of big, beautiful Burk’s Falls and you’re hankering for something delicious to eat – something different than the usual burger, the Burk’s Falls Café offers its version of the smash burger, and it will not disappoint.

Topped with cheddar cheese, a delicious in-house mayo, and two patties smashed and grilled to perfection between a brioche bun, for only $10.95 - your tastebuds will be thanking you.

Pit Stop Café

However, if you find yourself driving down Hwy. 518, in the biggest little Town of Kearney, you will find the cutest little spot called the Pit Stop Café.

On top of other delightful meals such as schnitzel on a bun or pulled pork, for $11 the Café is also offering a 6 oz. smash burger with gooey cheddar cheese and your choice of house-made burger sauces and a side order of fries.

Burk’s Falls Welcome Centre and Pulled Pork

If you’re looking for a good time (and maybe a case of the meat sweats) be sure to check out the Pulled Smokehouse & Welcome Center Canteen on the 520 on the edge of Burk’s Falls.

The Smokehouse offers up a variety of sammys’ and fortunately for all of us, The Smash is a double-stacked beauty complete with garlic aioli, and cheddar cheese nestled between a brioche bun for $13.

The Pub

Keep your eye out on The Pub in Burk's Falls' Facebook page as they are about to add their build-your-own smash burger to the menu full-time.

Double-stacked? Triple-stacked? Maybe you want to go for a quad? The Pub will be offering a completely customizable smash burger on their upcoming revamped menu and you won't want to miss out on it.

These burgers will give you a great bang for your buck and you’ll definitely be back for round two. If we’ve missed your favorite place to get a smash burger in Almaguin, let us know and we will be glad to check them out and add them to the list.
